This is a translation of the Japanese original. The Japanese version and the official materials from Nagoya City and the programme office are authoritative.

Nagoya City is knocking ¥8,000 to ¥20,000 per unit off the price at the till for residents who replace an air conditioner or refrigerator with an energy-efficient model. Buy at a registered shop in the city and the city's discount comes straight off at the register, and the shop handles the application for you. Purchases up to 22 December 2026 qualify[Nagoya City, Energy-Saving Appliance Replacement Programme (in Japanese)].

There is no limit on the number of units: replace three air conditioners at home and all three get the discount. Of the ¥606 million budget, ¥223,627,000 is left[Nagoya City Energy-Saving Appliance Replacement Campaign 2026 (in Japanese)].

Discounts of ¥8,000 to ¥20,000 per unit, with no limit on the number of units

*From Nagoya City's official page and the campaign site. Room sizes in tatami and household sizes are the campaign site's rough guides.

  • Who: individuals living in Nagoya City (businesses are not eligible)
  • Which products: new air conditioners and refrigerators with an energy-efficiency standard achievement rate of 100% or more, or a "multi-level rating score" (多段階評価点) of 3.0 or more
  • Where to buy: in person at a registered shop in Nagoya City. Online purchases do not count
  • When: buy between 23 May and 22 December 2026, and have it delivered and installed at your home in the city by 15 January 2027
  • Condition: it must replace an air conditioner or refrigerator currently installed in your home
  • How many times: no limit (you get the discount for every unit you replace)

For example, if you replace a 14-tatami (4.0kW) air conditioner in the living room, a 6-tatami one in the bedroom and a 450L refrigerator all at once, the discount is ¥20,000 + ¥10,000 + ¥15,000 = ¥45,000.

Note the refrigerator category boundaries. A 450L model counts as "under 451L", so it receives ¥15,000, while a 470L model receives ¥20,000. In the shop, please confirm using the "rated capacity" (定格内容積) figure in the catalogue.

¥223.63 million of the budget remains; at the average pace, it would last until 22 December

In the roughly 150 days from 23 May to 19 October, ¥382.37 million was used, an average of about ¥2.57 million per day. At that pace, the remaining budget covers about 87 days, so it would last until the campaign ends on 22 December (our estimate).

However, air conditioners sell mainly in summer, so the May–September pace will not necessarily continue. Applications may also increase during the year-end sales season. The most reliable approach is to check the remaining budget on the campaign site on the day you buy.

Fukuoka City's energy-saving appliance subsidy also started this year, but it had reached 88.2% of its budget as of 19 October, so unlike Nagoya it looks likely to run out of money before the deadline. The mechanism is also different: in Fukuoka you apply yourself after buying and wait about three months for the bank transfer. In Nagoya City, the procedure is complete with the in-store discount.

About 300 registered shops, including major electronics retailers

The list of registered shops (posted 15 October) has close to 300 stores across all 16 wards of the city. Besides big electronics chains such as EDION, K's Denki, Yamada Denki, Bic Camera, Kojima, Joshin and Yodobashi Camera, it also includes AEON, Nitori and local neighbourhood electrical shops.

Before you buy, there are two things you should check.

  1. Whether the shop you're going to is on the registered shop list (even within the same chain, some branches may not be registered)
  2. Whether the product you're buying is on the campaign site's "list of eligible appliances" (the air conditioner and refrigerator lists were updated on 15 October)

Payment with gift vouchers is also eligible. Apart from signing a consent form agreeing to the terms at the shop when you buy, there are no documents to prepare.

Cases not eligible for the discount

The discount does not apply in the following cases.

  • Adding a new unit: only replacements of an air conditioner or refrigerator currently installed count. Adding one to a new room does not
  • Buying online: only in-person sales at registered shops count
  • Bought on or before 22 May: there is no retroactive discount
  • A child living elsewhere buying on a parent's behalf: purchasing or signing by proxy is allowed only if the resident is 65 or older or finds it hard to buy in person because of a physical or mental disability. Even then, the proxy's name and contact details must be written in the margin of the consent form

One more thing that's easy to miss is the installation deadline: even if you buy by 22 December, it doesn't qualify unless delivery and installation are done by 15 January 2027. Air conditioner installation gets busy at year-end, so it's worth asking about the installation date before you buy. How energy-saving appliance subsidies from local governments around Japan combine with national schemes is covered in subsidies for energy-saving appliances and air conditioner replacement.
