This is a translation of the Japanese original. The Japanese version and the official materials of Fukuoka City and the programme office are authoritative.

Under its Energy-Saving Appliance Replacement Programme (省エネ家電買い換え促進事業), Fukuoka City subsidises households that replace an air conditioner or refrigerator with an energy-efficient model: one third of the purchase price, up to ¥30,000 for each. Replacing both brings up to ¥60,000. The application deadline is 29 January 2027, but it is first come, first served, and ends as soon as the budget runs out[Fukuoka City, Energy-Saving Appliance Replacement Programme (in Japanese)].

As of 19 October, applications worth ¥357.21 million had come in against a budget of ¥405 million, an execution rate of 88.2%. ¥47.79 million is left, enough for only about 1,590 applications of ¥30,000[Programme office site, budget status (in Japanese)]. If you have already replaced an appliance, apply today.

In short: if you replaced an appliance on or after 18 June, apply now. If you are still to buy, you risk the budget running out

¥47.79 million left. At the average pace, it runs out at the end of October

In the 77 days from the opening on 3 August to 19 October, applications have come in at an average of about ¥4.6 million a day (about 150 applications of ¥30,000). If that pace continues, the remaining ¥47.79 million would be used up in about 10 days, at the end of October (an estimate; the pace varies by day).

The estimated application amount is a preliminary figure obtained by multiplying the number of applications by the ¥30,000 cap. Some applications are below ¥30,000, so the actual remainder may be slightly larger, but not by much. The remaining budget is updated regularly on the top page of the office's site.

How much you get back: ¥90,000 or more including installation earns the full ¥30,000

Purchase (tax and installation included)One thirdSubsidy
Air conditioner ¥120,000¥40,000¥30,000 (cap)
Air conditioner ¥75,000¥25,000¥25,000
Refrigerator ¥150,000¥50,000¥30,000 (cap)
Air conditioner ¥120,000 + refrigerator ¥150,000—¥60,000

The purchase price includes delivery and installation as well as the unit itself. At ¥90,000 or more you get the full ¥30,000. Even if you replace two air conditioners, you can apply only once per household for air conditioners and once for refrigerators, and the cap stays at ¥30,000 per household.

Three common reasons for being ineligible

  • Energy-saving standard achievement rate below 100%: the national "Energy-Saving Product Information Site" also lists products with rates below 100%. Check the rate for each model number on the in-store label or the manufacturer's catalogue.
  • No Home Appliance Recycling Ticket: you must dispose of the old appliance under the Home Appliance Recycling Act and receive the recycling ticket. If you are adding an extra unit, or have thrown the ticket away, you cannot apply.
  • Shops outside the city or online shopping: eligible purchases are those made at "physical shops etc. within Fukuoka City". Check with the office before applying whether an online purchase qualifies.

Before replacing, if you want to know about energy-saving appliance subsidies from municipalities nationwide and how to combine them with national schemes, see subsidies for replacing energy-saving appliances and air conditioners.

How to apply and the documents you need

  1. Buy an eligible appliance at a shop in the city and install it at home. Dispose of the old appliance and receive the recycling ticket
  2. Online: enter your email address on the provisional registration page of the office's site, then use the URL in the email you receive to register your application details and images of the documents. By post: prepare the application form and documents and send them to the office (a trackable method such as simplified registered mail is recommended)
  3. The office reviews the application and notifies you of the result by email or post. You will be contacted if anything is missing
  4. Once the grant is approved, it is paid into the designated account (about three months after applying)

The five required documents are:

  • Subsidy grant application form (postal applications only)
  • Copy of the receipt (showing payer, purchase date, breakdown, product name and shop)
  • Copy of the manufacturer's warranty (showing the model number)
  • Copy of the Home Appliance Recycling Ticket
  • Copy of the bankbook or cash card for an account in the applicant's own name

Messages from the office come from "@nta.co.jp" and "@kintoneapp.com". Set your mail so they are not sent to spam. If missing items are not fixed by the deadline, you will not receive the subsidy.

For enquiries, contact the office (092-600-7873, weekdays 9:00 to 17:00) or Fukuoka City's Decarbonised Society Promotion Division (092-711-4282).
