The headline scheme is the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount (九州ふっこう応援割): 60% of the room rate in Kumamoto and Kagoshima, 50% in Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita and Miyazaki, capped at 20,000 yen per person per night (35,000 yen for a multi-prefecture itinerary). Bookings open in stages, starting with Fukuoka and Saga on September 24. Beyond that there are the accommodation discounts in Iwate, Fukushima and Akita that you can still catch, the residents-only schemes in Niigata and Hokkaido, and 30%-off activity discounts in Yamaguchi and Nagano. Everything below could be confirmed on an official page as of September 22, 2026, and is listed in order of when bookings open, together with the conditions - residents-only rules and budget caps - that can end a scheme early.
The short answer: the five Kyushu prefectures opening bookings within the next week come first, and budget caps will end them early
The Japan Tourism Agency's Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount is a national scheme supporting recovery from the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, covering stays from October 1, 2026. The subsidy rate is 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima and 50% in the other five prefectures. The discount cap per person per trip is 20,000 yen for accommodation only or one night with transport, 30,000 yen for two or more nights with transport, and 35,000 yen for a multi-prefecture itinerary covering two or more prefectures; a prefecture that reaches its budget cap ends the scheme even if the period has not run out[Japan Tourism Agency].

Ahead of the national scheme, Kagoshima started its own Kagoshima Tourism Support Discount (かごしま観光応援割) (up to 60%, capped at 20,000 yen) on September 14, and bookings piled in from day one. The prefecture published the outline of the national portion on September 17: bookings are expected to open in mid-October, eligible stays run from mid-October to the end of February 2027 (excluding December 26 - January 3), and the discount fund is up to 3,023,120,000 yen. It is the only one of the seven prefectures whose period crosses into 2027. We are following the substance of the scheme and how far the budget stretches in the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount article, and the prefecture's own scheme in Kagoshima's own accommodation discount.

Listed here are the schemes whose contents could be confirmed on an official prefectural or prefectural tourism federation page. Those already open to booking are at the top, those still to come are further down. Even where "Who can use it" says nationwide, there are exclusions for business travel and differences in the opening date between booking sites, so check the conditions on the official page before you book.

The 19 prefectures with no prefecture-level travel discount
As of September 22, 2026, these are the 19 prefectures where no prefectural accommodation or travel discount for this autumn and winter (September 20 - March 31, 2027) could be confirmed on an official page: Aomori, Yamagata, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Mie, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kagawa, Ehime, Kochi and Okinawa.
Kanagawa's KanaToku! (かなトク！) (a 20% cashless rebate) ended on September 6; Kochi's weekday campaign and Tochigi's winter weekday accommodation scheme finished their previous-year runs and nothing has been announced for this year. Okinawa is outside the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount. Still, "no prefectural discount" is all it means: there are accommodation coupons at the municipal level (accommodation vouchers in Hakone Town, coupons in Shimada City and Makinohara City, 2,000 yen off in Nishio City and so on) as well as booking sites' own coupons, so if your destination is decided, check the local tourism association's page.
Five things to watch: first come first served, residents-only rules, differing start dates, combining schemes, and tax
- Budget caps end them early. The Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount ends in each prefecture as soon as that prefecture's budget runs out, and with Kagoshima's own scheme some properties stopped taking bookings the day after it opened. If you are aiming at the three-day weekend in October, booking on the day the scheme opens is the baseline.
- Do not misread the residents-only rules. Niigata's Niigata Go To Travel and Hokkaido's Doumin-wari are for residents of that prefecture only. Nagano's activity discount differs by rate - 20% from outside the prefecture, 50% for residents - while Tottori's airport rental car subsidy is the other way round and is only for people living outside the prefecture.
- Start dates and allocations differ by booking site. In Oita, Miyazaki and Nagasaki the opening date is staggered between booking sites, inns and travel agencies, and some schemes, such as Ito City's, set separate schedules for each site. Even if one site has sold out, another may still have slots left.
- As a rule, national and prefectural discounts cannot be combined. You cannot stack the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount and a prefecture's own discount on the same stay. Municipal coupons (Koriyama City, Otsuchi Town and others) can be stacked only where the scheme explicitly says they may be used alongside the prefectural discount.
- The discount counts as occasional income. Travel discount subsidies are occasional income for tax purposes, and no filing is required unless, combined with furusato nozei return gifts and prize winnings, they exceed the 500,000 yen special deduction for the year. Frequently asked questions
Is there a nationwide, one-size-fits-all discount this year, like the old National Travel Support?
No. The only national scheme for autumn and winter 2026 is the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount covering the seven Kyushu prefectures; everything else is run independently by prefectures and municipalities. If your destination prefecture has no discount, you will be looking for municipal coupons or booking sites' own coupons.
Can I use the Kyushu Recovery Support Travel Discount if I book directly with the inn?
It differs by prefecture. Saga takes direct bookings from early October, and Miyazaki puts inns and travel agencies from September 28 onward. In most prefectures booking sites open first, so check the official page for the opening dates by sales channel.
Are there discounts I can use after the New Year?
Yes: Iwate's Phase 3 (January 4 - February 28, 2027, bookings from December 1), Fukui's Phase 3 (January 8 - 31, bookings from December 8), Akita Tokutabi (November 1 - February 28), Miyazaki's Hinatabi Phase 2 (from January 4) and Kagoshima's national portion (expected to run to February 28).
